Precise Navigation and Positioning

This chair has been held for the first time since 1 February 2008 by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Roman Galas.

Overview

Positioning and navigation (celestial, terrestrial, satellite-based, inertial) can be described as measuring methods for the determination of coordinates of a stationary object or an object in motion.
Advanced sensors to this end are based on measurements of physical forces or (modulated) electromagnetic waves.

Currently, the main research topics are concentrating on the following themes of satellite-based and inertial systems:

  • High-precision navigation and positioning of:

    • static objects and networks,
    • multi-sensor stations and measuring platforms in motion,
    • artificial satellites;

  • Software development and processing strategies for GNSS (Global       Navigation Satellite System) networks;
  • Theoretical background and applications of real-time data communication for GNSS;
  • GNSS software receiver technology;
  • Basics of INS (Inertial Navigation System);
  • INS/GNSS integrated navigation;
  • Application of real-time navigation systems for:

    • monitoring of Earth surface deformations using small-scale GPS-arrays,
    • geodynamic networks,
    • early-warning systems.

Further applications such as navigation of vehicles and pedestrian navigation (in co-operation with the chair of Methods of Geoinformation Science) and control of construction machines (in cooperation with the chair of Engineering Surveying and Adjustment Techniques) are planned as well.
