The penultimate equipment, the Wettzell Laser Ranging System was presented to us. Since the development of strong pulse lasers the technological requirements are given for distance measurements to fast moving satellites. For this purpose, the satellites are equipped with mirrors which are hit by the laser beam and reflect them. From runtime of the laser beam the distance can be reasoned. In fall 1972, the station Wettzell was supplied for testing of such laser ranging measurements with a laser ranging system of the first generation with an accuracy of about 1 m. At the end of the 1970s, this system was replaced by a newer one which allowed measurements up to accuracy of centimetres. The system used nowadays was ordered in 1986 and has been in use since 1990. Since 1991, this system is operated in three shifts for 24 hours on 350 days a year whereas among other things the geodetic satellites LAGEOS 1 and 2 as well as Starlette and Stella are observed.
